Learn about CNC machining, and methods for making knives and tools from John Grimsmo and the Grimsmo Knives team.
After starting in his garage in 2008, John Grimsmo became a self-taught CNC machinist. With lots of encouragement from his wife, Meg, he dedicated one day a week to making knives and documenting the process on UA-cam, and he called this series "Knifemaking Tuesdays" and it wasn't too long before John's brother Erik partnered with him. Now the business has grown to 12 people, and shows no signs of stopping. John hopes to be an inspiration for anyone going into manufacturing, and encourages everyone to "just start". His Full-Grimsmo philosophy pushes him to pursue perfection in everything he does.

This Tool Keeps Breaking, Let's Figure it Out!
A shiro, sinkevich, and Grimsmo collab would be amazing
I can't wait to get myself a fjell!
Why do you talk about the adhesive as being VHB, but you are showing and provided a link for 3M 467MB? They are two different adhesives.
Love your knives maybe one day
I am very impressed. I’m also sad that a Canadian living 1 hour away from you who is fully prepared and willing to purchase a $2000 knife of yours doesn’t deserve a return email when enquiring about buying one of your in stock knives. Total turn off and disappointment. Enough for me to say thanks but no thanks. Let’s see how your disrespectful customer service serves in the next recession fellas !
i’m a bob fan
Great video. I love the Norsman blade shape. Have you thought about doing a fixed blade with it? I think a collab with TKellKnives would be awesome!
I’m proud to support a Canadian fine knife maker and yes I’m Canadian. Not impressed that no one responds to my email however when I asked about purchasing one of your knives from you in stock inventory however. I bought a second hand knife because the careless impression I received doesn’t sit well with me when I’m ready to spend almost $2000 and $300 in tax. Not cool guys!
5:58 Steve has some nice hat!
I have number 1998 Norseman
One day some day I'll own a norseman
Hi John can you make a video how to setup the gang tooling
Awesome video. Good feedback from Sinkevich. I am curious if you going to try to make the blade a bit taller. Just to check how it looks. When the Fjell goes online I’m in!
Too much knife crime in Australia, cannot even carry an everyday size; scanning people at the shopping malls now.
This was so much fun to watch! I especially love any time I get to see different makers/designers/machinists discussing how and why they do the things they do, so getting to see your conversation with Shiro and Sinkevich was so great. I'd also completely forgotten that you filmed that bit where I was showing the sculptural art internals of the Magnus ClifkShift mechanism -- it's such a wildly different way of doing things than everyone else on the market, and such a fantastic juxtaposition with the MachineWIse Rota mechanism at the end. I'm so glad you were able to get Deylan on film walking through that one! What's fun is that if you take the BilletSpin CamPen mechanism apart, it looks remarkably similar to the Rota mechanism, everything is just upside down and inverted.
Will you be having a pre order for the new Fjell?
I was so happy to pick up my first Grimsmo at the show!! Rask #2900! Everyone at the booth was super nice and I’m so proud to finally own something y’all have worked so hard on. Next I’m going to need a Norseman..
that machined spring from that pen is so cool, never seen anything like that
It was a pleasure to see you guys again! I've missed a couple years too, but it always seems like home! Bought my Grimsmo off the plastic table still in pieces...lol One of the gems of my collection for sure! No. 087 checking in.
You guys are good people. You make good products that work and hold up. Congrats on the success. My Grimsmos will always be with me. True legacy blades and pens. I carried my Norseman, which was made in Feb 2020, every day through the pandemic. I was a front line worker. I'd disinfect my Norseman every day after a shift with 70% alcohol, and it stood up to the constant disassembly and reassembly. No issues whatsoever. Love that knife. It's never leaving my rotation. That knife was a companion with me through some pretty tough days.
That’s crazy the knife mechanisms just for the fun of it is one of the 12 books I own physical copies of
I had no idea LeRoi was at the show! I've got both volumes of his book sitting on my shelf right now. By far my favorite knife books of all time.
Just imagine, a collaboration with Grimsmo and Sinkevich 🔥
it’s so good to see a small family manufacturer with great work ethic and a design ethos that comes from trusting yourself - proud of what Grimsmo is doing
DAMN I was there, and I actually went looking for you guys and missed you !!! ive never handled a Norseman or a Rask and was hoping to do so!! Maybe next year!! In So Sorry to have missed you guys!! I love your products
The wife and I wish we could have been there, but I am happy I got Damasteel Norseman from the table! All hail my proxy!!!
Lower prices or increase hardness
He told at least two makers to raise their prices. No, everything is so expensive already.
You guys better take up Dmitry on his "OK, write me" comment. A Sinkevich-designed, Grimsmo-made knife could be competitive with Shiro's best collabs. ;)
Love seeing Shiro and Sinkevich not afraid to challenge other makers’ thought processes. Their attention to detail is evident!
me too, that conversation was sweet
The absolute best in the business. 👊
Plsease consider making left handed knives.
I would be happy with something as simple as a reversible pocket clip at this point 😊
Naah for that price I want full lefty version.
Thank you 😊😊
13:00 coolant in there maybe helps with vibration dampening
A computer and CAM software.
my god. Do you ever stop and take a step back to look? i can only see GROWTH.
Let me guess, its not the machine 😂 Wish i had a kern :( id be making mechanical watches lol Started making em by hand, abandoned not enough time lol
Real men wouldn’t even read that pamphlet in case it’s a manual. 😂
Hi, what are you using to hold the components in place while you lap? Is it a 3D print?
All that and then no plug in that unused coolant line?
Looking forward to that cad model!
A shame I missed it looks like a great time! I didn't even know till now and I am watching this 12 days late. LOL I am just covered up. I am still having fun fixing things one piece at a time, but I find this production stuff fascinating.
I love work I COULD WATCH IT being done all day:-))))))))
I'd be curious to see a comparison with a $300 optical stereomicroscope
Why dont you chamfer the opposite side using the CNC? Would that be difficult?
Nice work man! I'm trying to get into anodizing because I want to do my gun parts but there is like no info out there. Nobody explains anything from start to finish and it seems like there's a bunch of gatekeepers in this business which is so childish. I want to do gun parts and all I want to Is what power source do I need and Do I need a titanium anode or can I use an aluminum. It's so frustrating man
Looks like a landmine.
How do you cut off the tab while still blending the belly?
Have you ever seen a Eurotech? Twin spindle/twin turret lathe like the Nak, but allows simultaneous machining, and superimposed machining. They claim to be faster than Swiss
Where to buy this foam
Awsome tour
Appreciate the TEASE on the Damasteel Rask blades!!! 😇 ...and great work as always. Really appreciate you moving to buyer's choice. Super exciting!
